MIT CEEPR Again Ranked Among Top Energy Policy Think Tanks in the World

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (February 5, 2021): For the ninth consecutive year, MIT CEEPR has been ranked among the top ten energy policy think tanks in the world, according to the annual “Global Go To Think Tank Index Report” published by the University of Pennsylvania. Moving up one spot from last year’s report, MIT CEEPR was ranked sixth globally in the “Energy and Resource Policy Think Tanks” category, making it the second in this category in the United States.

According to the report, the ranking is based on a nomination process and survey involving over 70,000 scholars, public and private donors, policymakers, and journalists who were asked to evaluate over 8,000 think tanks around the world based on the quality of their research and their impact on public policy. The “Energy and Resource Policy Think Tanks” category identifies those think tanks that “excel in research, analysis and public engagement” and “provide superior innovative research and strategic analysis on a wide set of issues such as energy development, production, distribution, and various resource and energy issues significant to the global community.” 

“This year’s ranking recognizes the consistently high quality of our research at a time when facts and scientific insights matter more than ever” said CEEPR Executive Director Joshua Hodge. “We will build on this momentum in 2021 as we continue to address the most pressing challenges faced in energy and environmental policy. With a new administration in the U.S. and an unprecedented decarbonization dynamic at every level, the next few years will bring disruption, but also new opportunities for the energy sector. The “Global Go To Think Tank Index” is maintained by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) at the University of Pennsylvania, which studies the role think tanks play in governments and civil societies around the world. Since 2007, it has published a global index of think tanks, the most comprehensive think tank ranking designed to identify and recognize centers of excellence in every region of the world and in all major areas of public policy research. The 2020 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report was launched on January 28, 2021.
